Hey Kahani, Inc. ("Hey Kahani", "we", "our", or "us") is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and protect information when you use the Hey Kahani mobile application (the "App"), our website at heykahani.com (the "Website"), and the Kahani Player hardware device (the "Device") (collectively, the "Services").

We believe in privacy by design. Our mission is to provide screen-free experiences for children, and we apply that same philosophy to your data: we collect only what is necessary to operate our Services. We do not sell your data, use it for advertising, or share it with third parties for their marketing purposes.

Information We Collect

1. Account Information
To register a Kahani Player and access the App, you must create an account. We collect:

  • Your name and email address.
  • Your password (stored in encrypted form).
  • Optional: Your child's first name and age range (used solely to personalize conversation cards and content recommendations).

2. Device Setup & Bluetooth (BLE)
To connect your Kahani Player to your local network, the App uses Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE).

  • Purpose: BLE is used exclusively to exchange Wi-Fi credentials between the App and the Device during the onboarding process.
  • Constraint: We do not use Bluetooth for location tracking, nor do we store your Wi-Fi password on our servers.

3. Hardware Usage & Playback Data
Because the Kahani Player plays audio locally via NFC "Koel" cards, the hardware communicates specific metadata to your account:

  • What is collected: Which story was played, timestamp, duration, and volume levels.
  • Purpose: This data triggers the "Conversation Cards" feature in the App, allowing parents to engage with their children about what they just heard. It also populates your in-app listening history.

4. Unique Identifiers
Each Kahani Player is assigned a UUID (Universally Unique Identifier). This is tied to the parent’s account to ensure hardware security and to prevent unauthorized access to our content library.

5. Purchase Information
All purchases are processed through our Shopify storefront.

  • We receive order confirmation data (Order ID, items purchased) to unlock content in your App.
  • Payment Security: We do not store credit card numbers or sensitive financial data. All payment processing is handled by Shopify and its partners.

How We Use Your Information

To Deliver Services: Creating accounts, registering devices, and syncing listening history.
Engagement: Generating personalized "Conversation Cards" for parents based on recent hardware playback.
Improvement: Analyzing aggregate, anonymized usage patterns (e.g., "Which stories are most popular?") to inform future content development.
Security: To diagnose technical issues and prevent hardware misuse.

Data Security & Retention

Encryption
We implement rigorous technical measures to protect your data:

  • In Transit: All data transmitted between the App, the Device, and our infrastructure (Supabase/AWS) is encrypted using Industry-Standard Transport Layer Security (TLS/HTTPS).
  • At Rest: Personal information and credentials are encrypted at the database level.

Retention & Deletion

  • Active Data: We retain playback data for 24 months to power your listening history and guide our content readiness.
  • Immediate Deletion: You may delete your account at any time via the "Delete Account" feature in the App Settings. Upon using this feature, all personal account data is scrubbed from our active databases immediately.

Children's Privacy

Hey Kahani is a tool for parents to facilitate their children’s screen-free learning.

  • Accounts are created by adults, not children.
  • The hardware plays audio independently and does not collect ambient audio or voice recordings.
  • The App is intended for adult use (analytics and conversation prompts).

Your Rights

Depending on your location (including GDPR/CCPA regions), you have the right to access, correct, or delete your data. To exercise these rights beyond the in-app tools, contact us at [email protected].
